Work at Home – Pros and Cons

It's Curtains! (For Your Windows, That Is!): Dress Up Your Mundane Window Coverings

by Jared Butler

Window coverings, window treatments, curtains; whatever you want to call them, you have to have them on your windows. However, they do not have to be boring or ugly or even drab and mundane. Here is how you can junk the boring curtains or just dress them up enough to take them from drab to fab.

Skip the Really Basic Plastic Blinds

Landlords love the super-cheap, ultra-narrow, strip plastic blinds. They cost very little, and landlords meet the standard requirements for basic window coverings in all of their apartment dwellings without spending a lot of money. Yet, that is definitely not the look you want in your own home or on your windows. Skip the really basic plastic blinds. If your home came with them, junk them. Nothing makes a window, or a room for that matter, look more dull than blinds of this sort. If you really want blinds, buy the more expensive kind with wide slats that look like real wood grain, are painted different colors, or are Roman shade-type blinds. These dress up a window better and they look a lot nicer.

Drapery Supplies

The items that make the most impact with window treatments are not just the curtains or drapes, the drapery accessories and the way these accessories are attached and used. Tie-backs, for example, come in the form of either sashes, or metal, porcelain, or cleverly disguised plastic drapery holders. The holders can take the form of everything from hearts to flowers to angels to stars and everything in between. These drapery holders are U-shaped, and are attached via screws to the wood frame or wall near the frames of the windows. They hold open your drapes or curtains when you do not want them drawn.

Other drapery supplies include rods, double rods, hardware, hooks, rings, and more unique rods that hang draperies or curtains in unique and fun ways. You can buy a lot of these supplies in the same places you buy your curtains or drapes. You can also get them from a drapery specialty store, or from an interior decorator who specializes in window treatments.

Rich Fabrics

Rich fabrics make all the difference in how your windows appear. Consider velvet, jacquard, burn-out velvet, laces, embroidered laces, heavy sateen, etc. Not only do these fabrics look amazing as window coverings, but they also completely dress up the entire room and compliment everything else present.
