Tips For Replacing Pond Liners

by Jared Butler

If your backyard fish pond has sprung a leak, then you need to patch the hole in its liner. Patching your pond's liner is a simple procedure if you purchase a repair kit. Inside of the kit will be the following materials:

  • extra rubber liner material
  • rubber primer
  • rubber adhesive
  • sandpaper

In addition to the kit, you need a sharp pair of scissors.

Once you have purchased a liner repair kit, then here are some tips for patching your fish pond liner like a professional:

Tip: Wear Disposable Gloves While Patching Your Pond Liner

As you work with your fish pond's liner, you should wear a pair of disposable gloves. Since fish carry diseases and bacteria that can enter cuts in your skin and make you sick, you need to protect your hands. Additionally, wearing gloves will keep the rubber adhesive from staining your hands as you handle the pond liner patch.

Tip: Prepare the Pond Liner Well for Patching

Once you have lowered the level of the pond down below the leaking area, then you need to properly prepare the liner for patching. You can do so by first drying the liner thoroughly. To the dry liner, apply a layer of rubber primer to prepare the surface for the rubber adhesive. Let the primer dry while you prepare your patch material.

Tip: Apply a Round Patch to the Prepped Pond Liner

When you are ready to cut the excess rubber material to make the patch, you should cut it in a circle. The corners of a square patch are susceptible to peeling and getting caught on the rocks in your fish pond, while a circular patch will not have this issue.

To prevent the patch from lifting up as it ages in place, make sure that you apply the rubber glue over the entire surface of the patch including around the very edge, and then put the patch in place and rub all of the air pockets out from underneath it. Let the adhesive dry before you refill the pond.

Tip: Check the New Patch for Leaks

Finally, after you have patched the hole in your fish pond's liner, then you need to refill the pond's water. Watch the area you patched, and make sure that you do not see bubbles coming up from it. If you see bubbles, then you still have a leak and need to repatch the liner.
