Essential Things You Need To Know About Moving Out Of State

by Jared Butler

Moving can be a stressful experience, even if you are just relocating within the same city. While there are plenty of resources online to help you make sure you organize and pack your belongings properly, if you are moving out of state, there are specific legal issues you need to consider. The following list can help you make sure you do not forget some important tasks you need to perform during an interstate move.

Check the Legal Status of Exotic Pets

If are the owner of an exotic pet, you need to find out if you can legally transport the animal across the state line and keep it in your home. You may be surprised to find out that even some types of fish and birds are not allowed in certain states.

Some states allow almost any type of exotic pet while others have very strict laws. The municipality that you move to may have even further restrictions that may include outlawing ownership of dog breeds that are considered dangerous, such as pit bulls.

Furthermore, federal laws including the Endangered Species Act and the Captive Wildlife Safety Act prohibit interstate transport of endangered animals and big cats such as tigers.

Avoid steep fines and possible imprisonment by doing your homework on exotic pet laws before getting a beloved animal companion ready for moving to your new home.

Check State Agriculture List for Prohibited Fruit and Plants

The beautiful bamboo that serves as a border in your yard may be illegal in some states. The ornamental grass along with other beautiful plants can wreak havoc on some habitats. If you want to take cuttings from plants in your yard to plant at your new home, you need to make sure the species of the plant is not considered invasive in your new state.

State agriculture departments have strict laws on importing certain types of plants that have the potential to overtake native species. Some states, such as Florida and Texas, such may not allow you to bring in certain types of fruit, especially citrus due to the potential of introducing harmful pests and diseases to native crops.

Check with the state's department of agriculture to find out about bans on invasive plants and fruit quarantines. Many states also have online databases of invasive species.

If you try to cross the border with banned plants and fruit, you may be forced to relinquish them to agriculture inspectors before entering your new state.

Research Deadlines for Driver's License and Vehicle Registration

While it is common sense that you will need to apply for a new driver's license and vehicle registration as well as update your insurance when you move to a new state, do not wait too long to do so.

Some states have laws that require you to complete these tasks within a certain time period. Call the department of motor vehicles in your new state to find out the deadlines. The general time frame is 30 to 60 days so put these tasks on your moving to-do list.

Compare State Income Tax Laws

If you are moving from a state such as Texas that does not have a personal income tax, you do not have to worry about making sure you file a state tax return for your old locale once you move.

However, if your old home does have a state income tax, consult with an accountant to find out details on what you need to do to make sure you fulfill your taxpayer obligations even after you leave the state.

Make sure your old employer has your new address so they can send you your end of the year wage and tax statement.
