Want To Start Your Online Business? 4 Skills You Should Acquire

by Jared Butler

When you are ready to delve into starting your online home business opportunities, you should acquire a few skills to get your business off the ground and increase your chances of success. With some time and dedication, you can gain the confidence to take charge of your online business.

Website Design And Management

You need a domain name and hosting to even step foot into the online world, but you need more for a successful website. First, you need to determine which content management systems (CMS) are supported by your web host, and which one is suited to your needs and skills. If your web host offers the opportunity to install a CMS that is different from the most popular ones, consider choosing a less popular CMS.

There are benefits to choosing a CMS that is not widely known. Just because a CMS is popular, does not make it user-friendly for beginners and can make your website more vulnerable to hackers. Most website threats are directed at popular CMSs. Learning basic website creation and management skills will give you more control over the aesthetics and functionality of your website.

Logo Design

Branding is everything when you are starting a business. Your logo will help customers recognize your products and services. As a startup business, hiring a graphic designer to create a logo can cost more than you can afford to pay. Popular graphic design programs may be out of your budget, so find a similar program that is open-source to create your logo. You will need a program that creates files in scalable vector graphics (.svg) to create your logo. The major benefit of creating .svg logos is the image you create is scalable.

Whether you need to resize your final image to fit a sign or a business card, the image will never appear distorted. As your business grows and you have the money to reinvest into your business, you can always send your logo files to a graphic designer to freshen up or change your original logo. When you create a logo, it is helpful to create a separate text file to maintain information on the colors and fonts used. This way, you or a graphic designer will always know the specific color number (RBG or HEX) or font name to keep your graphics consistent.

Social Media Management

Without an active social media presence, your business can fall by the wayside or never gain momentum. Registering for every social media platform in the beginning is a recipe for burnout. Multiple accounts are often too much to manage in the beginning. Start simple, you can add accounts later. Stick with platforms that give you the most visibility and opportunities to use various types of media.

You will want to make social media posts to announce new products or services, or just to chat with subscribers. Pictures and videos are good media options, because they often attract more attention than written information. Another reason to stick with one social media account in the beginning is that you want to keep your audience engaged. If you are not adding new posts to the account regularly and are not answering questions from your subscribers, you will lose engagement.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the most important skill that can benefit your business. You need to have some knowledge of how to effectively make your online business rank highly on search engines, and you should be abreast of the constantly evolving SEO landscape. Do not become caught in the trap of only focusing on the most popular search engine when you are designing your website and content.

You need to learn what can help you rank highly on all major search engines, and find a way to merge the information to create a website that works across most search engines. Focusing on a single search engine means you will leave out a subset of the online population, or even worse, if you are de-ranked by one search engine, your website can seem to disappear completely.

Preparing for the launch of your online business will take preparation. Learning to manage the fine details yourself can reduce your startup costs and allow you to have more control over your business.
