Work at Home – Pros and Cons

2 Easy Ways To Maintain Your Air Conditioning System

by Jared Butler

Do you know how important it is to properly maintain your air conditioner? If you do not take care of the maintenance, it is possible that your system will become damaged, stop working and ultimately need to be replaced. Instead of spending more money on a new system, simply follow a few simple tips to keep the one you have in fantastic condition.

Change the Filter on a Monthly Basis

When your air conditioning unit is running, dust particles will make its way over to the vent. You may not see the dust at first, but it will eventually become obvious as more dust starts to appear. If you leave the vent covered in dust, you may notice that it does not feel nearly as cool in your home when you put your unit on. Unfortunately, the dust would keep that cold air from flowing.

The dust would work its ways back to other parts of the system, such as the coils and the motor. If dust accumulates on these different parts of the unit, they could eventually become damaged. You would likely end up with costly repairs or the need to replace your unit with a new one. One way to avoid this problem is to change the filter on a monthly basis.

You can buy replacement filters in bulk at home improvement stores. Some people like to keep the same filter, but they make sure to give it a thorough cleaning at least once or twice a month to keep it free of all the debris that could cause any type of blockage.

Clean Out the Coils

The coils inside of your air conditioner will get dirty over a period of time. The dust from the filters will eventually cause a blockage if it does not get taken care of properly. As a result, your air conditioner will have to work harder to produce the cool air inside your home, thus raising your energy bill. Because it has to work much harder to do its job, the unit could end up damaged and broken in no time.

You could prevent this from happening by cleaning out the coils on a monthly basis. Simply remove the front base of the unit and the vent before spraying a coil foaming cleanser directly over the front of it. You can find the foaming cleanser for coils at most home improvement stores. Along with using this foaming cleanser once or twice a month, consider cleaning out that front section of your air conditioner with a hose once a year before the warmer seasons arrive.

Some of the best things you can do to preserve the condition of your air conditioner include changing the filter regularly and cleaning out the coils within the system. Completing these two simple tasks could potentially keep you from spending more money on repairs or a replacement unit.
